I was looking around today to see if the list of people who won/placed in the FAW Christina Stead Award had gone up. I knew that I had achieved a Highly Commended as I was invited to attend, but couldn’t because of travel and work.
Today I found the document online and I had no idea I was ranked with such TALENTED individuals! Like …wow!
This weekend [18th – 19th of April] is Gold Coast Supanova! It’s a pop culture festival incorporating all kinds of nerdom. I’ve met a lot of my followers because of Supanova when they took a stroll down the Artist Alley 😀
I’ve been going to Supanova (mostly Brisbane, before Gold Coast was a thing) since 2006. It’s changed SO MUCH over that time and grown like crazy. The Alley has expanded too with a new section now available on the application form, “Indie Press Zone”. A great number of independently published authors have seen that Supanova is a great place to meet people who love reading. It’s also a great experience for us and we love talking to you.
Although sometimes we do get rather shy when we see people squinting at us from a distance. I always panic and think that they’re judging me. I need a sign that notifies people that I’m insecure, maybe?
Speaking of insecure, two years ago today I was feeling both excited and nervous. I had just printed out my first copy of BOUND at a local store and was ready to edit. YES! Little did I know a year later I would be SELLING the book at Gold Coast Supanova for the first time, and right now, I’m going again with THREE books! I mean … CAPTIAL LETTERS SAY IT ALL!
I can’t wait to see those who are coming at the show and talk about what went down when I return!
Have a safe and happy weekend!
Wow, I’ve only just realised that it’s been a long time since we sat down together and had a chat. What’s new with you?
As a lot of you know, I recently attended RWDU. It was a fun event and I met a lot of great people and fans who had read my books and wanted to say hello. That was easily the best part. I also strolled down to the beach and met big-time indie author Kristen Ashley who was basically mobbed the whole weekend, but I got an hour chat SOLO. I’m so lucky that way. I bump into famous people … and it takes me 5 minutes to realise who they are, which is embarrassing!
Now it’s April and time to look ahead to the future! April holds for me Supanova Gold Coast from the 18th – 19th at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Last year I attended GoldNova as a seller for the very first time. It was nice to swap my veteran attendee status for a spot in The Alley. I’m shocked at how well I did with only one book, basic posters, next to no swag and a petrified look on my face that I’m sure was there.
In case you were wondering: NO, I WILL NOT BE COSPLAYING! I used to cosplay and it was so much fun, I also really enjoy and support cos-artists! But I won’t be cosplaying anymore. I want to focus on being M.J. Stevens – Author and Badass (LOL)
However, I do have awesome new shirts I made just for this occasion! They’re YA and Guardian related so, high-five for inside jokes. Ahhh, remember them? 2003 flashbacks …
Finally, you’ve all been seeing the posts about Liberated. I’m working hard on it. I’m trying to figure out what parts of Selestia we will see for the final book and begin bracing my characters for the end. I have no idea what I’m going to do without these guys! Kind of feels like graduation all over again.
That’s all for now!
